The church is the heart of the monastery, the monastery is the heart of Plasy. Moreover, the early Baroque architecture of the Church of the Assumption in Plasy contains a Romanesque building whose western portal, which was only discovered by experts in 2006, dates back to the beginning of the monastery’s construction around the middle of the twelfth century. It is therefore the oldest Cistercian monastic church in the Czech Republic.
However, the current state of the church is far from matching its significance or historical uniqueness. The situation is soon to change for the better. The reconstruction of the church has received support from the Integrated Regional Operational Programme (IROP). The amount of the IROP subsidy is 95%. The town of Plasy decided to support the project with a considerable amount of 1.5 million.
In the first phase of the project, part of the furnishings will be restored. The biggest costs will be spent on the complete repair of the exterior facade. The northern perimeter wall will be lowered and rainwater will be drained away from the building, which will result in a reduction of moisture in the masonry, but also in the entire interior of the church, where the woodworm is now extended. As part of the repairs to the façade, the important Romanesque portal will be structurally secured. In the interior of the church, the interior plasterwork will be finished, and interior lighting and sound systems will be installed. Behind the sacristy, a new exhibition will be created, which will bring visitors closer to the building form of the church in different historical periods.
Ing. Iva Fictumová from the Bishopric of Plzeň will speak at Plas. The lecture followed by a discussion will be part of the programme of the Night of Churches 2018.
The opening ceremony was also attended as a guest by the Director General of the National Technical Museum mgr. Karel Ksandr. The cooperation between the National Technical Museum, the parish and the town of Plasy has been successfully developing since the NTM joined Plasy in 2008.
