The National Technical Museum is organising a “Lime Saturday” at the Centre of Building Heritage in Plasy on Saturday 7 October 2017 and invites visitors to practical demonstrations of traditional lime technologies, lectures, guided tours of the exhibition, discussions with experts and a creative workshop with sgraffito production suitable for children.
“Until 50 years ago, there was a lime pit at almost every cottage. Today, only the old-timers know how to extinguish lime. And who has seen how to prepare ‘hot mortar’ or use ‘lime slurry’? ” says Pavel Kodera, head of the CSD Plasy NTM, and invites visitors to Saturday’s programme.
In cooperation with the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the CAS, the NTM will hold an experimental firing on 5-7 October 2017 at the Centre of Building Heritage in Plasy, which will be carried out in a kiln built in the traditional way based on information obtained from historical plans, archaeological findings and preserved building relics. On Saturday, 7 October, the lime obtained from the firing will be taken out of the kiln, extinguished and stored in the lime pit in the CSD Plasy Building Crafts Yard with the participation of the public as the main point of the “Lime Saturday” programme.
During the “Lime Saturday” visitors will have the opportunity to get acquainted with traditional lime technologies. In addition to collecting the lime burnt during the previous workshop, lime will be extinguished, various ways of using it will be demonstrated, participants will have the opportunity to attend lectures, screenings, guided tours of the ending exhibition “Calcarius or Limestone” and a workshop with sgraffito making will be prepared for creative adults and children.
The programme of the “Limestone Saturday” is free of charge as part of the admission to the CSD Plasy NTM Building Exposition.
