The National Technical Museum and the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the CAS, v. v. i. in cooperation with the Institute of Archaeology of the CAS, Prague, v. v. i. and the Czech Technical University invite experts and those interested in historical building technologies to a practical seminar dedicated to traditional lime technologies and the restoration of block masonry using replacement stone. The first day will be filled with lectures on traditional methods of lime firing and processing, archaeological evidence of lime technologies and related lime issues. It will conclude with a professional authorial opening of the exhibition “Calcarius, or Limestone” with a guided tour and screening of films on lime production and lime technologies.
The programme of the second day includes a lecture block on the selection and processing of stone for the replacement of blockwork, which will be complemented in the afternoon by practical demonstrations of stone craft using replicas of historical tools. On both days there will be lime firing in a small lime kiln and the construction of a disposable lime kiln of the mylar type. There will also be a demonstration of traditional lump lime slaking and a demonstration of hot lime mortar preparation. Finally, it will be possible to see the displays and workshops of the newly opened Centre of Building Heritage.
