Similarly to the exhibition, the catalogue also clearly separates the section devoted to construction joinery and the section specializing in parquet joinery.
The chapters devoted to construction joinery define this craft in general terms and present the individual processes of the traditional craft by describing the production of a specific product – a door leaf. The text by Lukáš Hejný, head of the NTM’s Department of Architecture and Construction, relies here mainly on historical building manuals and is supported by the professional experience of Miloš Kodýdek, a joiner who has long been involved in traditional handicraft production. The following richly photographed catalogue of the elements of building joinery, especially windows and doors from the collections of the National Technical Museum, illustrates the craftsmanship with concrete examples. The catalogue of hand tools and historical equipment of the mechanical joinery workshop documents the change in the technological approach to the craft.
The section devoted to parquet and parquetry is a fundamental and probably the only comprehensive view of the subject that has been produced in this country so far. The authors, Martin Ebel, director of the NTM Museum of Architecture and Construction, in collaboration with Iveta Krupičková, trace both the typological transformation of parquet and the development of parquet production technology; at the same time, they attempt to introduce a system into the terminology used in the field. Also revealing is the essay devoted to the first parquet factory in Bohemia in Nebřeziny near Plasy, which dates back to the 1930s.
