This weekend (12-13 March 2016) the National Technical Museum opened the first visitor season of the Centre of Building Heritage Plasy. The public can visit the newly renovated farm complex of the heritage-worthy Plasy Monastery, where the National Technical Museum completed the Centre of Building Heritage Plasy in autumn 2015 and presents building history and traditional architecture from the Middle Ages to the present in an attractive way. In the first weekend of this season, the CSD Plasy was visited by 1448 visitors.
Karla Šlechtová – Minister of Regional Development; Daniel Herman – Minister of Culture; Zdeněk Hanzlíček – Mayor of Plasy attended the opening ceremony.
” The opening of the Centre of Building Heritage in the premises of the extremely valuable monastery in Plasy means for the National Technical Museum an extension of the exhibition space outside Prague and an extraordinary opportunity to present the history of building construction both in the exhibition, which is divided according to the individual stages of the construction of the building, and in the farmyard, where it is possible to try out historical technologies that are now forgotten and which are nowadays dealt with industrially, e.g. “Lime processing or work in the forge.”
The Permanent Building Exhibition is located in the former brewery building and presents materials, structures and building elements from different historical periods – various types of bricks, plaster, doors, windows, roof trusses. Part of the exhibition is dedicated to contemporary architecture – the personality and work of architect Jan Kaplický. In the building of the former mill short-term exhibitions are held, currently there is an exhibition Calcarius or lime, focused on traditional methods of lime processing.
In the rugged grounds of the farmyard you can experience the work in the carpentry workshop, try your hand at blacksmithing or take part in a firing. Programmes for different school levels and professional meetings are organised here.
In 2008, the National Technical Museum took over the buildings of the former economic facilities of the monastery in Plasy in a very dilapidated state. As part of a project co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Integrated Operational Programme (IOP), intervention area 5.1 – National support for the use of the potential of cultural heritage, the NTM carried out the restoration of the farm complex in two phases – in the first phase from 2012 the former brewery, malthouse and mill and in the second phase from 2014 the restoration of the farm yard. The total cost of the project exceeded CZK 337 million.
The National Technical Museum is opening the Plasy Building Heritage Centre with the aim of fostering respect for building heritage, conveying a deeper understanding of building history, passing on traditional skills and bringing inspiration and enjoyment.
