The last Friday night in September has been dedicated to science in Europe for eleven years and this year, for the first time, Plasy will welcome visitors to the European Night of Scientists. The theme of this year’s Night of Scientists is safety, and the Plasy Centre of Building Heritage of the National Technical Museum, which will be presenting the field of civil engineering and architecture this evening, will therefore introduce visitors to the field of structural engineering, especially bridge construction.
The programme of the European Night of Scientists will take place in front of the NTM Plasy Centre of Building Heritage. Pavel Kodera, the event coordinator for the NTM, says: ” The museum will come out of its exhibitions and allow people to try out statics in practice. They will be able to find out how to build a bridge that can bear the greatest load, how to bridge the widest possible space, how to build a self-supporting bridge without any connecting elements, what a plain piece of paper can bear, or even spaghetti. Nothing convinces a man better than his own experience.” Visitors who are tempted to discover what secrets the museum hides at night will also get the opportunity – the CSD Plasy NTM Construction Exposition will be open until 9 pm.
The main organizer of the European Night of Scientists in Plasy is the West Bohemian branch of the Czech Astronomical Society, which has long experience in organizing the Night of Scientists and for its intention to promote science it purposely chooses places that are less accessible to the possibilities of large cities connected to scientific life. Astronomers will, of course, take up telescopes and observation of space objects, and at the same time will give 4 interesting lectures on astronomy and physics in the lecture hall of the Building Heritage Centre. The town of Plasy will also come out to meet the night of the scientists and will turn off the public lighting after dark to improve the observing conditions. The programme will be enriched with experiments in physics, chemistry and biology by other organisations such as the University of West Bohemia, the Plasy Gymnasium and local and neighbouring primary schools. See the programme at http://www.astro.zcu.cz/cs/clanky/clanek/309/.
The event will take place on Saturday 30 September from 16.00 to 23.00. The programme is free of charge.
Exposition of architecture will be open until 21.00, full admission 50,- CZK, reduced 30,- CZK.
