The educational programme of the National Heritage Institute called Artisanal Restoration of Historic Buildings continued in March in the forge, foundry and plumbing shop of the National Technical Museum in the Centre of Building Heritage in Plasy.
How to properly repair a monument? What are the right technologies and methods for heritage restoration? This is what the participants of the training programme, the third year of which was prepared by the Territorial Technical Centre in Telč, should learn. Since November 2016, it has been training a diverse group of people – craftsmen (stonemasons, flooring contractors, carpenters, operating technicians), enthusiastic owners of monuments and conservationists from the National Heritage Institute. The craftsmen want to improve their skills on the courses, the owners would like to understand their buildings in order to prepare a restoration project, and the NPA staff link theory with practice.
From November to February, practitioners lectured on important steps in the preparation of the restoration of a monument. In workshops, participants tried their hand at making artificial marble or casting a profile with Romanesque cement. In March, the camp continued in the workshops of the National Technical Museum in the Centre of Building Heritage in Plasy, where forging and casting were continued. The carpentry craft on a timbered house in Chlum and the restoration of a shingle roof in Manětín were demonstrated by master craftsman Petr Růžička. In April and May, the restoration and completion of wall paintings at the Čechtín brewery near Třebíč is scheduled, in June a plastering workshop is planned at the farmhouse in Chlum u Dubé, and a stonemasonry workshop is also planned in Zdislavice u Kroměříže. The practical part of the courses will conclude with a flooring workshop at Velké Losiny Chateau. The courses are intended for craftsmen, conservation workers, investment technicians of church buildings, owners of historical buildings and other interested members of the public.
